Senator Don Davis visited our November 14, 2020, meeting with NC Updates. He was introduced by Edith Warren. Edith congratulated Senator Davis on his re-election on November 3, representing District 5. Senator Davis is from Snow Hill, where he served as Mayor of Snow Hill from 2001 until his election to the NC Senate in 2008. Senator Davis has a doctorate in education from East Carolina University. He has taught at East Carolina University, Pitt Community College, and Lenoir Community College. Senator Davis briefly shared comments about the state of NC Education and Federal issues. He commented that students, educators, and parents are struggling with the COVID-19 pandemic and pushing to get students back to school. He discussed some salary concerns where some teachers received increases, some did not, and retirees did not get a cost of living raise in their retirement benefits. Another issue discussed was the need for broad band connectivity. He commented that NC has improved with the help of grants, but we still have a long way to go. He also discussed the possibility and challenges of vaccinations for COVID-19. There are many concerns: logistics of getting the vaccines to the people, how it will be distributed, etc. In concluding his presentation, he wished the best for our educators, and for everyone to have safe holidays. |

Games: Putting Play Back into Practice for Children
"This work brings together a collection of games that have been a part of childhood through the ages, games that continue to be played in various forms around the world. Many anthologies of folktales, music, and other forms of art have been collected for readers, but there are not many works on the subject of traditional childhood games and their role in the important “work” of childhood, which is in fact play. This book helps to meet a growing interest among educators and parents to encourage natural play and creativity in a world that is increasingly digital. Directions, descriptions, illustrations, of traditional childhood games, supported by educational theory are included. The material covered will not only help parents and educators to support children in play, but will also provide an anthology for consultation by those who see the need to preserve traditional play long associated with childhood."
